What's your favorite movie?

Movies add a great deal to our lives. Movies can cause us to be introspective, productive, frightened, happy, sad, or even furious. Movies have the ability to cast us into an imaginary world; offering a brief escape from our daily lives.

This weekend I saw the movie Law Abiding Citizen. It was a very good movie, and the main characters were well cast and believable. The suspense was palpable and the plot drew me in. However, the movie took me to a place that I wish I had not been exposed to.

The opening scene erupts with fright as murderers enter the home of Gerard Butler, knocking him out with a baseball bat, and then raping and killing his wife and little girl. I'm sorry for the plot spoiler, but here's my point - My life has been hindered by seeing this movie. I woke up afraid of answering my door! Yes, truly, it had that severe of an impact on me. I find myself nervously searching our locks and making sure my dogs are by my side.

This very scene played out recently in a neighboring city to where I live. There was a knock on the door at midnight (although Gerard's knocker came at dinner time). The attackers had guns and beat the three inhabitants, putting two in a bathroom - one with a knife to her neck and other a gun to his head. He was asked if he'd like to see the woman bleed out if he'd like to be shot first. Meanwhile, the intruders realized that they had the wrong house! It had been a theft gone bad.

The real-life episode frightened me, of course, but seeing the scene on the big screen - that was a force not to be reckoned with.

I think I'll screen my movies more thoroughly next time.

What's the last movie you saw? Did it impact your life in a negative or positive way?
