When I was interviewed by Don McCauley, he asked me how I was able to convey such raw emotions of the characters in Megan's Way. I told him the truth, and didn't think too much about it until I heard his response. My answer was that on several occasions I acted out scenes before, and during, the writing process. That enabled me to climb into the mind and body of each character and feel what they would have felt in the more emotional scenes.
Don interviews thousands of authors, and he said that he has never heard of a writer doing that. I cannot imagine writing without acting out my scenes. Sometimes I act out facial expressions and take gasps of breath just to feel what my characters might feel, or see what they might look like, or hear the sound a gasp might make. I assumed that all writers did the same thing.
I'm curious about this. If you write, do you act out your scenes? Do you put yourself into your character's shoes and feel what they feel, see what they see?
I can't imagine writing any other way.
